Plastic football kit….. what next?

Proving that the diversity of plastic is never ending Manchester United Football Club (a generous donation of tickets to our auction for Help For Hero’s and the HoneyRose Foundation) have teamed up with Adidas and the environmental initiative Parley for the Oceans by creating a Manchester United Football Club kit from recycled ocean plastic.

Recent news has highlighted the necessity to address the issues of waste plastic that has been disposed of incorrectly, ways to address this are to up-cycle and recycle. The sportswear brand worked with the environmental organisation to highlight the issue of marine pollution, and bring it to the forefront.

This plastic football kit will be Manchester United Football Clubs third kit, the design in blue has several meanings, one reflects the kit worn in the clubs European Cup Final success over Benfica in May 1968. The other is the blue of the ocean, highlighted with “for the oceans” embroidered on the neckline.

Richard Arnold commented “We are all acutely aware of the threat of plastic to the environment and we are delighted to be able to raise further awareness with this recycled kit, which I am sure the fans will love.”

“We all need to change the way we think and act towards our oceans. It is this core belief that we all share at Adidas, which is the reason why our innovative partnership with Parley for the Oceans is so important to us,” said Adidas product director Oliver Nicklisch.

This is a venture that many other football clubs are considering, the negativity towards plastic has been immense with regards to how destructive it is. The positives of plastic are often overlooked, by reusing waste plastic to create new products we are making a difference. Regrinding and reusing waste plastic in the creation of recycled kerbside collection and food waste products is a step that Coral Products (Mouldings) LTD have made as a company to improve our impact on the environment reduce waste materials and take further steps towards a 360 circular economy focused business.

We look forward to creating new products, and seeing other businesses taking the steps towards minimal waste.
